Trim, Painting and Finishing

Trim is a form of moulding or casing used around windows and doors. In most cases, trim is made of wood or of MDF [Medium Density Fiberboard]. It is essential because it covers any gaps that may exist around the edges of your windows and doors. It also protects plastered walls from damage, especially those found in interior doorways.

The number one rule of having a trim installed is to make sure it matches with other crown mouldings in the house, or it will not have the same look. There are several types of trim that you can consider. These are:
Casings
This kind of trim is designed to cover gaps that may exist between window and door frames and usually has a width of 2 - 3 inches.

Baseboards
These are simple quarter rounded trims that connect the wall with the floor. Typically, they should measure 3-5 inches wide.

Crowns
A crown is a decorative mould that decorates a transition between a ceiling and a wall. It boasts of silhouettes and is sometimes known as cornice mould.

Chair Rail
A chair rail is a form of trim that can be used for decorative purposes, especially to delineate two different wall covers and to protect the walls from been damaged by furniture.

Picture Rail
If you do not wish to destroy your drywall when hanging artworks and pictures, then you can install a picture rail instead. To be more decorative, it is combined with crown moldings, and it is usually 2 inches tall.

Cove
Cove can be considered a type of crown mainly used where treads and risers meet on the stairs. It is classy and never fails to impress.

Batten
A batten is a kind of wall trim used to hide the joints of two pieces of panels.

Best Trim Paint for Windows, Baseboards, and Doors
various baseboard styles
Once you have identified the right trim to use, you have to decorate it. To paint your trim, you will want to select a trim paint. Trim paint falls in the category of interior paint and this means that it is most commonly a satin gloss, high gloss or semi-gloss. We at Victoria Drywall KJR can help you design and pick a final look for your space.

There are several characteristics of excellent trim paint that you should always look out for. These are:
It Should Not Show Brush Marks
Always use trim paint that is oil-based in nature because they tend to level out brush strokes. Also, oil paint takes longer to dry, allowing the paint more time to settle smoother.

Should Contain Gloss
An excellent trim paint should contain gloss because it has tighter molecular structures. Since there are no dedicated gloss paints, consider satin, high gloss, or semi-gloss paints.

Has Non-Yellowing Properties
Though most people paint their trim white, the colour will start to turn yellow if it is blasted with sun rays for an extended period. This is why the paint bought must have non-yellow properties.

Trim paint comes in two main varieties:
  • Oil-based
  • Acrylic-latex

Oil-based trim paints are known for their glass-like finishing and thick solution. The paint is a slow drying paint and its biggest disadvantage is that it produces fumes. On the other hand, acrylic –latex paint does not have the rock-hard shell texture of oil paint and produces minimal brush marks. One main advantage of acrylic paint is that it is easier to clean up than oil paint.
Several paint brands in the market are suitable for trim painting. These are:
  • Benjamin Moore: It has 100% acrylic resin and gives a semi-gloss finish
  • Behr: Easy to clean up after use and gives a semi-gloss finish
  • Glidden: Suitable for use in trims and furniture painting
  • Olympic: Can be used for both exterior and interior surfaces
  • Valspar: Easy to clean with soap and water and is suitable for use in interior painting
  • Sherwin-William: This brand is suitable for use in interior painting
