5 Reason Why Not to DIY
We have decided to list the most common DIY drywall mistakes done by first-timers and YouTubers. These are:
1. Selecting the Wrong Compound

Most people think they can do this themselves but make the mistake of buying an “all-purpose” compound or taping mud. What YouTube videos do not tell you is that an all-purpose taping mud should not be used when applying a final coat. The kind of compound used should depend on the type of board installed. Also, you might use a “fast-setting” mixture that will give you a hard time trying to smooth it.

2. Overlapping Drywall Tape

Most amateurs tend to overlap their drywall joint tape, believing that they will hold stronger and better. However, contrary to popular belief, overlying the drywall will only result in a bulge making your wall unattractive. When you get a drywall estimator to look at how much it will cost to fix the bulge, expect the estimator to include the cost of replacing the entire board and also mudding it.

3. Applying a Compound Over Another Compound

Another mistake done by amateur drywallers is that they apply a new compound over a dry mixture. This mostly happens when they do not know how to properly handle a taping knife. As they spread the mix on the board, excess mud tends to escape from the knife’s corners, creating unintentional ridges. If you do it yourself, you will only spend more and more time trying to remove these ridges.

4. They Forget to Feather the Board

Feathering is a smoothing technique used by professional drywallers to apply a coat of mud then smoothen the edge of the compound in such a manner that you cannot tell where the wall starts and where the mud stops. Most amateurs who try this technique hold the knife with too much pressure that ridges are formed. When a ridge is created, you have to start all over again.
5. They Lack the Right Equipment

When you prefer to install drywall yourself, you should have the right equipment for sanding drywall mud. Drywalling is a messy procedure, and you might fill your house with dust, making it more expensive when you hire a cleaning company. The first equipment you require to have is a face mask. This will prevent you from inhaling dangerous particles that may result in respiratory diseases.

You are also required to have a Tape plastic sheeting to prevent dust from escaping the room and protective eyewear.
